This home was built and designed in 1908 by Mr. Eckerd, a famous architect who built many of the schools, hospitals and historical buildings in Hickory, North Carolina. He lived there with his wife only, until they had children. That is when the upper second level was built, so they had rooms for the children and also more space for his work. The back room is very large, this was his office, with built-in cabinets and a large window for light. There is a door from this room leading into a smaller room - that is natural wood bead board; this is where his drafting board hung.
